Woven Language + Learning reflects my lifelong exploration into how language shapes learning. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that it’s all about associations—and that the ability to access and express these associations is influenced by many factors like experiences, trauma, and working memory.

When I began my career as a Speech-Language Pathologist, I believed that children with language disorders struggled to make associations and that problem-solving was simply a language skill. Fast forward more than two decades, and I’ve seen firsthand that students and adults with developmental and acquired language disorders can make associations. While problem-solving involves cognitive and executive functioning, language is a key tool in the process.

My journey—from mentors, jobs, and patients, to the challenges and successes along the way—has woven together my passions and approach. Today, my work in teaching, training, and communication is grounded in understanding how what I know connects with what others know. I believe in linking words through their associations, building schemas that are tied to personal experiences.

At the heart of this is the belief that we all understand our thoughts, feelings, and learning better when we can visualize meaning. Using pictures to anchor meaning is a powerful tool, but it requires understanding the principles of association. This is how we truly connect with language—and with each other.

What About Me?

My name is Karolyn Mirasola and I am the founder of Woven Language + Learning. People who know me call me Kary. I have worked as an SLP for over 25 years. I started my career at a private practice, where I was hired by a teacher and mentor and I can’t even begin to describe all that I learned from the connections we shared. In 2003, I started working at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, now called Children’s Wisconsin. For the next 20+ years, I navigated many opportunities, changes, colleagues, bosses, and locations. I am incredibly proud of my time there and my contributions to other’s understanding of the language and learning needs of older students and adolescents.

I have been married for 20+ years to Michael who is my partner in life, including the creation of this business and website. He is my graphic designer and has helped me realize and execute the dream of owning my own company. We have two kids, age 18 and 15 who have taught both of us more lessons than we can count. I was always grateful for the opportunity to try out some of my strategies with my kids, who thankfully also love language.
